Red Flag Indicators of Human Trafficking
- Large number of people living in one household
- Security cameras surrounding a residence
- Barbed wire or bars on windows
- Guards at entrance or keeping watch
- High walls or fences surrounding residence
- Blacked out windows
- Inconsistencies in stories
- Inability to make eye contact
- Restricted/scripted communication
- Injuries/signs of physical abuse or torture
- Young teen with large amounts of cash or with only hotel keys
- Person without money or identification
- Housing provided by employer
- Vans of people come and go in middle of night
Questions to ask to help identify possible trafficking victims
- What type of work do you do?
- Are you paid?
- Do you have money or does someone hold it for you?
- Can you travel by yourself? Do you have your identification papers or does someone hold them for you?
- Do you feel safe? Have you or your family been threatened?
- Where do you sleep at night? Are there locks on your windows and doors so you cannot get out?
- Do you have to ask permission to sleep, eat, go to bathroom?
